FDM Explained
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is one of the most widely used 3D printing technologies. It is often employed for rapid prototyping, functional parts, and low-volume production.
Post-Processing: Depending on the material used and the complexity of the design, parts may require some post-processing such as sanding, polishing, or assembly.
Layer-by-Layer Printing: FDM uses a process where a thermoplastic filament is heated to a semi-liquid state and extruded through a heated nozzle. The material is laid down layer by layer to build up the object.
Material Choices: FDM printers typically use a variety of materials such as PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU, and others. Each material has different properties suited for specific applications, from durability to flexibility.
Support Structures: For more complex geometries, FDM prints support structures, which are later removed once the part has cooled. These supports ensure overhangs and intricate shapes are built properly during the printing process.
Speed and Cost-Effectiveness: FDM is known for its relatively fast turnaround and low-cost production, especially for prototype parts or simple designs. It’s a great option for low-volume manufacturing or design verification.
FDM printing offers versatility and accessibility, making it a popular choice for a wide range of industries including automotive, aerospace, healthcare, and consumer goods. It is particularly ideal for creating parts with moderate strength requirements, prototypes, and functional components.

FDM Materials
ABS: Widely used thermoplastic offering enhanced mechanical and thermal properties compared to PLA. Known for its excellent impact resistance and robust performance, it delivers good mechanical strength, though with slightly less detail definition than PLA.
ABS GF – Glass Fibre: ABS GF is a glass fibre reinforced filament combining the durability of ABS with the strength and stiffness of carbon fibres. This material offers excellent dimensional stability, reduced warping, and a lightweight yet robust finish, making it ideal for functional prototypes and high-performance parts.
ASA: ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) is a durable filament known for its excellent UV resistance, weather-ability, and high impact strength. Its superior outdoor performance and smooth finish make it ideal for applications requiring long-term durability in harsh environments.
Nylon: Nylon filament is a versatile and durable material known for its high strength, flexibility, and excellent wear resistance. Its low friction and impact tolerance make it ideal for functional parts, gears, and industrial applications requiring toughness and reliability.
PETG: PETG is a durable and versatile filament combining the strength of ABS with the ease of use of PLA. It offers excellent impact resistance, chemical resistance, and low warping, making it ideal for functional parts, prototypes, and outdoor applications.
PETG CF – Carbon Fibre: The addition of carbon fibre offers excellent impact resistance, chemical resistance, and low warping, making it ideal for functional parts, prototypes, and outdoor applications.
PLA: PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable filament that is easy to print and produces detailed, high-quality results. Perfect for prototypes, models, and decorative items, it is a go-to material for rapid prototyping.
TPU: TPU is a flexible, durable filament known for its high elasticity, impact resistance, and excellent abrasion resistance. Ideal for creating soft, flexible parts like seals, gaskets, and wear-resistant components, TPU offers a great balance of toughness and flexibility.
